Sholeh: Chin in Hands Grin

Library, Wednesday
Sholeh breezed into the library in a much better frame of mind that she had last weekend, carrying a richly frosted cake. After the alarm (which hadn't wakened Sholeh up,) Zhari'd had trouble falling back to sleep and had decided to make a cake to celebrate the day's event: their seventeenth birthday!

Cake, a birthday, and books. What better way to celebrate?

If you can resist the siren call of cake, sure!

Because cake. Also, birthday. But mostly cake.

Evan really wasn't here for cake. Sure, cake was a nice bonus, but cake was not his girlfriend, thank you.

Nope, not here for cake at all. Though he did have a little wrapped gift in his hand and he was looking a touch fidgety, if tired. Gift-giving always did make him feel awkward. Especially when he didn't go for his usual go-to when getting presents for Sholeh.

"Hey... Happy birthday."

Sholeh looked up at Evan, ducked her head, blushed, smiled, and made herself look back up. Things were still a touch awkward between them, and unsettled, and complicated, but here he was on her birthday anyway.

"Thank you," she said. "Seventeen now."

Not that there was any chance he didn't know that.

It was kind of hard to forget, really.

"I'll be catching up to you in no time," Evan replied with a tiny smile. And it was true enough- his own birthday was on Saturday, after all. "But for the time being, it's your day in the spotlight. Well. You and your sisters."

Good of him to remember that they were there, too!

"I got you something." A beat. "I kind of got you all something. Different somethings. I mean, I don't want you to have to share gifts, or..." Stop, Evan. Stop. Breathe. "... There are presents."

"But until Saturday, you're still only sixteen and I'm seventeen," Sholeh teased. "I can go into rated-R movies and you have to wait outside."

Because that was definitely something Sholeh planned to do, right. And Zeela, well, she had never paid attention to those warnings anyway.

"You didn't have to do that," she said. "Especially for Zeela."

=HEY!=

"Zeela didn't get anything all that great anyway," Evan replied, wearing a small, teasing sort of smile. "Really. She'll probably think her gift is dumb."

Because Evan was pretty sure Zee thought everything was dumb. So.

"But I wanted to."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

Untrue! Knives were cool. Knives were totally cool!

...If he got her a book, she would consider it dumb.

"No she won't," Sholeh said, because whatever reaction Zeela did have was going to be filtered through Sholeh. "I'm sure she'll be properly appreciative of the fact that you didn't have to get her anything anyway, and be grateful."

*This and other birthday miracles...* Zhahar teased.

"Can I get you some cake? Zhari made it."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-23 01:43 am (UTC) (Link)

"Oh! Please? If Zhari's cakes turn out half as good as her casseroles, it must be amazing!"

Birthday flattery!

Evan smiled, and then held up a fingers for a moment before he went through a brief rummage inside of his school uniform jacket. One of these days, he'd just wear casual clothes around the campus. Honest. Today was still not that day. Either way, he was producing two more wrapped gifts to go with the one that he'd been carrying, setting them down on the returns desk.

Ignoring Zeela's grumbling, Sholeh cut Evan a big slice of cake and handed it over to him on a paper plate.

"Zhari says she hopes it's as good as you think it will be," she said. Beat. "Can we open them now?"

Look, Zeela wasn't the only one who wanted to see what she got!

Re: Talk to Sholeh

2014-01-23 02:21 am (UTC) (Link)

Evan smiled and nodded his head eagerly. The three packages were all very different sizes- Zhahar's was actually the largest, followed by Zeela's, and then Sholeh's. But they were all wrapped with the same paper and the same measure of care. He'd even put thought into them!

... Gift certificates to the bookstore he worked at would have been way easier.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-23 04:58 am (UTC) (Link)

*My present's the biggest. He likes me the best,* Zhahar teased as Sholeh reached for the gifts.

Zhahar appreciated her gift, though it was nothing compared to the enthusiasm of Zeela. =What are those--hey! Lemme use the voice, Sho.=

"Evan." For once, Zeela's voice lacked the mocking tone it normally had. "These are really cool. Thanks. You know. For thinking of me. And stuff."

She sounded almost...unsure.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-23 05:22 am (UTC) (Link)

Evan gave his shoulder a tiny shrug.

"It's your birthday," he noted, softly. "I figure if there's any time anyone deserves a little consideration..."

He shrugged again. It was weird to hear Zee talk to him like that, like they were on the same level, somehow. Weird, but he was okay with it. And besides that, he didn't expect it would last.

"You three all gave me a Christmas last year." He grinned faintly. "This is payback."

Revenge for the mistletoe!

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-23 06:20 am (UTC) (Link)

If by 'revenge' he meant 'heartfelt appreciation,' then yes. Yes it was.

"Good, then that means I don't have to get you anything for your birthday," she mumbled, before floating down far enough so Sholeh could use the voice again.

It was a good thing she did, because she needed it to gasp when she opened her present. "How wonderful!" she cried, holding it up. "It's the cutest thing! And it matches my gift from last year!" She reached down under her collar and pulled out the thin, gold necklace that Evan had given her. "Now it's almost a set! Thank you, Evan!"

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-23 01:37 pm (UTC) (Link)

Evan didn't know enough about jewellery to begin to guess at what went into a set. A ring?

... A ring would totally give the wrong idea, wouldn't it?

Maybe a tiara. Next year, Sholeh was totally getting a book tiara.

"I'm glad you like it," he replied, giving her a warm smile. "And I made sure to get it in green, so it would go with a lot of what you wear, too."

Seriously, he'd actually fretted over this.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-26 10:56 pm (UTC) (Link)

Ahahaha, a ring would totally shut Sholeh down into a panic. A book tiara was a much better gift.

Sholeh slipped the bracelet on and admired the way it rested on her wrist. "We can't thank you enough," she said, leaning forward to kiss his cheek. "You're so thoughtful. Towards all of us."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-26 11:01 pm (UTC) (Link)

Oh, cheek-kisses. Evan ducked his head a little, smiling, and gave his shoulders a shrug.

"You've never given me a reason not to be," he murmured, blushing faintly. "I mean, even Zee isn't malicious when she's being awful."

... That might have come out wrong.

...

No. No, it was just accurate.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-27 04:28 am (UTC) (Link)

If Zee had a reply to that, Sholeh wasn't sharing it aloud. "That was a thank you from them," she said instead. Then leaned over to give him another kiss, this one full on the lips. "This one's from me."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-27 04:45 am (UTC) (Link)

Oh, hi.

"I think that's my favorite thank you," Evan shared, smiling a little and blushing a little more at the kiss. "If you thank me like that all the time, I think I'd be the luckiest boy alive."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-27 04:52 am (UTC) (Link)

=If you thanked him like that all the time, he might finally get lucky,= Zee snorted.

Sholeh was just going to blush brightly and hastily look away. Stupid Zeela. "I think that I don't even need to thank you to want to kiss you like that all the time," she admitted softly.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-27 05:19 am (UTC) (Link)

"I don't think I want to have to wait until I do something for you to thank me for in order to get kisses like that," Evan admitted right back, biting his lip. "That was a very nice kiss."

If he needed to do things worthy of thanks for every kiss, he'd just spend the rest of his days trying to one-up himself.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-27 07:46 am (UTC) (Link)

"You know, we should prove that we don't need a special occasion to give kisses like that," Sholeh decided.

And then gave him an expectant look. C'mon, Evan. You can do it.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-27 01:24 pm (UTC) (Link)

That hint would've been less subtle if she'd wrapped it around a brick and threw it at him through a window. Evan smiled a little, and then hooked his hands around her waist.

"You know, you're right?"

And the kiss he gave her was every bit as fervent as the one she'd given him. Maybe a little more, in fact, since she'd suggested that this was just the sort of thing he should be doing right then.

Happy birthday, Sholeh.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

Sometimes it was good to be blunt. It got her kisses, didn't it?

She probably couldn't do it often or for much more than kisses, but if you couldn't ask for kisses on your birthday, when could you?

"You should give me more kisses like that when we're not at the library," she murmured when she pulled away. "I mean...if you want to."

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-28 01:58 pm (UTC) (Link)

"I do want to," Evan replied, biting his lip and smiling. "I... I think I'd really like to give you kisses like that any time."

After the awkwardness of the other day, an invitation like that?

Well, he'd be dancing back to his dorm room, later. He hadn't ruined everything.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-28 11:28 pm (UTC) (Link)

Nope. She'd tried to tell him that the other day!

"Zee and Zhari have plans for the rest of the day," Sholeh said carefully, for the benefit of any squirrels. "But maybe tomorrow? We could meet up? Not in the library?"

Were you picking up what she was putting down, Evan?

Re: Talk to Sholeh

genesishero

2014-01-28 11:32 pm (UTC) (Link)

Meeting up? For kissing?

This was the best plan.

"Tomorrow," Evan replied happily. "We can eat and read together and..." He ducked his head a little and smiled. "And do more of that."

Tomorrow was going to be great.

"Hello Sholeh!" Yeul said cheerfully as she wandered into the library. "Happy birthday to you and your sisters!"

Look! It was a Yeul! On the proper day!

But not in the proper comm, failsauce me!

"Thank you!" Sholeh said with a grin and a way, in a much better mood than when Yeul had seen her last. "There's cake to share to celebrate, if you'd like some!"

Re: Talk to Sholeh

pulseof_life

2014-01-23 12:17 am (UTC) (Link)

It happens to everyone now and then!

Yeul appreciated the improved mood more than the offer but who was she to turn down cake?

"I would love some," she said, smiling. "Did Zhari make it? It looked lovely." Yeul's smile widened. "A proper celebration requires presents, however! I have gifts for you and your sisters, if you would like them?"

She didn't think they would turn down presents but, well, stranger things had happened.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-23 12:39 am (UTC) (Link)

*Thank you!* Zhahar and Zeela said in unison.

Sholeh moved to cut a slice of cake for Yeul, carefully transferring it onto a paper plate and handing it over with a fork. "Zhari made it after the fire drill last night," she explained. "She wasn't able to fall back asleep."

=The presents. Tell her we want the presents.=

::I'm waiting till she takes a bite to be polite!:: Even is Sholeh was shifting on impatient feet. "We're very grateful you thought of us today."

=That was polite. Now say we want 'em!=

Re: Talk to Sholeh

2014-01-23 12:53 am (UTC) (Link)

"Of course I would," she said, smiling at Sholeh's fidgeting, and reaching for the fork. "It makes me happy to see you happy."

Yeul was easy that way!

She took a bite of the cake. "This is delicious!"

Re: Talk to Sholeh

2014-01-23 01:41 am (UTC) (Link)

*Thank you very much! Sholeh, thank her for me.*

"Zhahar is very glad you like it," Sholeh dutifully reported, smiling. "She says 'thank you very much'."

=Now ask her for the presents.=

"I'm sorry I didn't think to bring milk or anything," she continued, because it was very rare she got to tease Zeela. "If you're thirsty, I can see if I can fetch some water or something? I know the cake is pretty rich."

=Worst sister.=

::Pretty sure that's you,:: Sholeh and Zhari chorused.

Poor Zeela! Constantly thwarted.

Yeul shook her head. "Oh no," she said, "I am fine. I would not want to be an imposition on your birthday."

That would be terrible.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

"You're a friend, no an imposition," Sholeh assured Yeul. "I can pop down to the water fountain really quick. Won't even be a moment."

Just saying. The offer was there if you weren't entirely sure!

Re: Talk to Sholeh

pulseof_life

2014-01-23 02:23 am (UTC) (Link)

Yeul considered her for a moment, smiling slightly at the insistence.

"Only if you wish for a drink," she said finally.

Re: Talk to Sholeh

3girls_1core

2014-01-23 05:02 am (UTC) (Link)

"Maybe later," Sholeh decided. "If I have another piece of cake."

And then, feeling like she had been good and patient for long enough, she added in a small voice, "Would it be okay if I opened our presents now?"

Re: Talk to Sholeh

pulseof_life

2014-02-21 03:15 am (UTC) (Link)

"More than okay," Yeul said with a soft laugh. "You've been very restrained about them."

It was also a good thing Yeul's pockets were so deep, since her gifts weren't exactly small, all together.

For Sholeh, there was a rather flat box, in which she would find one of her gifts. Inside of that gift, she would find two other things, both wrapped in tissue. One was breakable, while the other had been too cute to resist, even if they were rather silly. Zhahar's gifts came in a wrapped basket. Inside of the basket was one soft present, and one rather less soft.

While both Sholeh and Zhahar's largest gifts had been picked for charm and appeal, Zeela's was rather different. "This one is from Caius," Yeul said, setting a box on desk. "He says, it is best to have a spare. And that the other gift is just in case." And, well, five phoenix downs were great for that sort of thing. Yeul hoped that Sholeh and Zhahar didn't mind that Caius hadn't gotten them anything. She didn't think Caius had thought of it. "From me," Yeul continued, "are these two." One was a very flat package, while the other held three small bottles all labeled as 'Deceptisol'. Both of Yeul's presents came with neatly written notes explaining what they were.

Yeul surveyed the pile of gifts. "I may have gone overboard," she admitted, "but I picked what I thought of for each of you, so I hope you do not mind."

Since there were so many gifts and no one else in the library, the sisters agreed to open their presents individually, rather than having Sholeh open everything and relay their thanks. Since she was already in view, Sholeh began with hers, squeeing over the card catalogue bag. "This will be perfect to carry all of my books in," she said, beaming. "And, oh! These are the cutest bookmarks ever!"

The mirror felt heavy, so Sholeh opened it carefully, then spent a moment slowly spinning it around to read everything. She could hazard a guess why Yeul would combine a gift of inspirational words with a mirror and looked up at her friend with a soft smile. "These are wonderful gifts," she said. "Thank you."

Next in view was Zeela, as the second-youngest. The extra knife got a fierce grin out of her. "Caius is the best," she said, a little thickly. Look, his gift meant a lot to her, okay?

The ribbon earned a dubious look, until she read the explanation that came with it. "Wait, this is some kind of fancy magic armor?" she demanded with a grin. "Mother's third eye, you've done the impossible and got me a ribbon I'll wear voluntarily. You really are magic!"

She threaded the ribbon through her hair, appreciating the color through her dark locks. "Thanks, Yeul. This is a pretty great haul."

And last was Zhahar's turn. She came into view, Zeela's bright ribbon fading, and opened up the picnic basket. "This is gorgeous," she said, picking up the scarf and rubbing it against her cheek. "And--what's this? It looks like fireflies!"

Zhahar leaned over the desk, intending to give Yeul a hug. "You give wonderful gifts," she said with a soft smile. "Thank you so much."
